Inês Lopes is the first Portuguese holder of the post and, at 25, the youngest. She succeeds Sarah Howe who was in the hot seat for three years and has gone on to work as a freelance writer.
Inês is Algarve born and bred and knows the region intimately. Her appointment comes after six years as a key and successful member of the newspapers’ production team, having begun her career in 1998 as an editorial support assistant. Her natural ability and creative skills soon became apparent and she moved on to designing and producing news and feature pages, eventually assuming responsibility for many aspects of news gathering and production planning.
Inês speaks and writes English fluently and admits to a “good knowledge” of German, French and Spanish. She was educated at the Escola Secundária Padre António Martins de Oliveira in Lagoa where, for two consecutive years, she was awarded the top student prize.
“The Resident is essential reading for the ex-pat and English-speaking community in the Algarve and now Lisbon,” she said. “Its role has not come about by chance. It is the result of a major team effort to produce a professional and relevant publication. It is a challenge and an honour for me to be able to take it forward as the Editor.”
Sheena Rawcliffe, The Resident’s director, commented: “Inês was the natural choice to become our new Editor. She is a very talented individual and has demonstrated her ability in so many ways since she began her career with us. It is very rewarding to know that she has reached the top in such a short time. We wish her every success.”
