Medronho inspires play inside distillery in Marmelete

A play that provides an insider’s look into the production of Monchique’s famous Medronho liquor will premiere on Thursday, March 14 at a distillery in Marmelete.

Entitled ‘Medronho #2 Serra, capítulo segundo’, the play is included in the Lavrar o Mar project which promotes several cultural events in inland towns in the Algarve, like Monchique.

Directed by Giacomo Scalisi, written by Afonso Cruz and featuring the performances of actresses Marta Gorgulho and Neusa Dias, the show will pay homage to a part of Monchique that was not affected by the fires with the knowledge that “in an instant, everything can change”.

The first round of shows will take place between Thursday, March 14 and Sunday, March 17 followed by a second run between Thursday, March 21 and Sunday, March 24. All shows begin at 8pm.

Tickets cost €10 (including a light meal and medronho tasting) and are being sold online at bol.pt, at Worten, Fnac and CTT post offices and at Casa Lavrar o Mar in Aljezur and Monchique’s municipal library. They can also be purchased at the venue an hour before the show begins.

However, organisers warn that “a fluent understanding of Portuguese is required for a full appreciation of this performance”.
