Mediterranean plant sale  is a first for Algarve

The Algarve group of the Mediterranean Garden Society is organising the region’s first sale featuring specialist nurseries and plants suitable for water-wise gardens.

The plant sale will be from 11am to 3pm on November 7 at Quinta Fonte do Bispo, near Santa Catarina, on the road between São Brás de Alportel and Tavira.

Nurseries from Spain as well as central and southern Portugal will be represented at the sale. Plants on offer will include bulbs, grasses, succulents, lavenders, shrubs and trees. Members of the garden society will also be offering tried and tested plants they have grown in their own gardens.

Master classes will take place which will include question and answer sessions about planning and maintaining drought-tolerant gardens. The master classes will focus on grasses for dry gardens, and on soil and fertilisers.

The Mediterranean Garden Society chose November for the event because it is the ideal time of the year to buy and plant in the Algarve as the winter rains will ease the plants into their new homes and help get them established before the return of the summer months of heat and drought.

Visitors will have the opportunity of meeting and talking with fellow gardeners struggling with the same conditions.

Admission is free and there will be ample parking. Food and drinks will also be available.
