Mediterranean Garden Fair moves to new turf

The Mediterranean Garden Fair, described as the Algarve’s only specialist Plant Sale, will be held this year at the Museu do Traje in São Brás de Alportel on Saturday, October 29, from 11am to 4pm.

The venue is a new one to the organisers, Mediterranean Gardening in Portugal, but the leafy and spacious courtyard to the rear of the museum building is ideal for visitors to browse in comfort, buy plants and shrubs and sit in on one of the specialist practical talks, which are free to attend.

The talks that have been confirmed so far are by Fernanda Botelho, in Portuguese, on “Herbs and Spices in Portuguese Cuisine”, contemporary uses and traditional uses, and how they can be used to treat people and plants.

Daisy Mae, in English, from Ceratonia will tell us about producing aromatic herbal medicinal effects with your favourite plants that are well adapted to the Algarve.

Landscape architect Gonçalo Duarte Gomes will talk in Portuguese, with English translation, on “An Oasis Close at Hand” addressing the issue of sustainability in gardens in the Algarve.

Visitors can buy some trees, shrubs, plants or native plant seeds adapted to the Mediterranean climate and obtain advice from the nursery owners.

There also will be organic essential oils and organic local produce (fruit and veg) and the popular books stand with titles covering all aspects of gardening in the Mediterranean climate. If visitors have second-hand gardening books to donate the organisers will be happy to accept them at their information point.

Refreshments will be available and the popular plant crèche service will be in operation as usual with a collection point with car access. There will be a drop-off point for less able visitors to the event.

The Friends of the Museum and the São Brás de Alportel municipality have been keen to hold the 2016 event on their turf and their help has been essential to the organisers who say the venue is almost purpose-built for this year’s Mediterranean Garden Fair.

Entry is €1 (under-16s free) and there is parking around the museum.
