Waterwise Gardening will be the theme of the second Mediterranean Garden Fair to be held on Saturday, November 6, from 10am to 2pm, at La Reserve in Sta. Bárbara de Nexe.
Rosie Peddle from the Algarve group of Mediterranean Garden Society, organisers of the event, said: “In order to build on the wonderful response to our first event last year, a new and bigger venue has been chosen. It is easily accessible from the A22 and is close to the Algarve Stadium.”
The format will be based on last year’s plant fair and similar events held regularly in the UK.
Home gardeners will be able to buy plants from the people who have propagated them. They can also attend demonstrations and join in question and answer sessions about planning and maintaining drought-tolerant gardens. Short talk topics will include ‘Using native plants in the garden’, ‘Natural swimming ponds’, ‘Grasses for dry gardens’ and ‘Soil and fertilisers’.
This year will also feature a specialist water plant nursery, a demonstration of solar cooking and a mosaic workshop.
“The MGS chose November for the event because it is the start of the gardening year and the ideal time of the year to buy and plant in the Algarve,” said Rosie Peddle. “Winter rains will ease the plants into their new homes and help get them established before the return of the summer months of heat and drought.”
Nurseries at the sale have been requested to bring their range of plants suited to waterwise gardening in the Algarve. The plants on offer will include bulbs, grasses, succulents, lavenders, shrubs and trees. MGS members will also be offering a selection of tried and tested plants and seeds they have grown in their own gardens.
Admission to the fair is one euro. There will be free parking and food and drinks available.
