Giving trainee doctors and nurses the opportunity to perform high-fidelity simulations of surgical and other medical procedures is the main goal of the new Medical Simulation Centre located at the Gambelas campus of the University of the Algarve.

The centre was inaugurated on Wednesday, March 1 by health minister Manuel Pizarro, science, technology and higher education minister Elvira Fortunato; and territorial cohesion minister Ana Abrunhosa.

It allows aspiring health professionals to learn how to carry out a number of medical procedures such as treat a patient who suffered a heart attack or help a pregnant woman give birth.

Ana Abrunhosa said: “The Algarve now has a vital facility to assist in the educational process of students in clinical and surgical situations, but also to attract health professionals. This is an example of a project that helps improve training and internationalises the region.”
