news: Medical, dental and complementary healthcare

General Dental Practitioner Dr. John McKean qualified in 1975 from the University of Birmingham Dental School, UK, and is part of the team at Clínica Pacífico in Albufeira.

Dr John McKean is able to relate to the fear of dentists after a painful experience as a child left him a dental phobic and he now works to help alleviate patient fears at Clínica Pacífico.

“I spent much of my early career finding ways to overcome patients’ fears. The main problem is that the patient, feeling intimidated, feels out of control of his situation. Many had been to dentists who gave instructions on how to signal discomfort, but the dentist just carried on, thus destroying any faith the patient had and increasing the feeling of panic,” he said.

“We try to make all patients feel welcome and relaxed. Patients must always feel in control with whatever treatments they are undertaking and we make sure they understand the treatments that are recommended and what alternatives there are, while keeping patients fully informed of cost implication.”

Dr John McKean first opened a dental practice in Albufeira in 1995 but now works from the newly-converted premises of Clínica Pacífico, close to the Continente shopping centre.

Clínica Pacífico not only offers a full dental service but also has medical and complementary medicine services offering clients many treatments.
