“McSpansion” on Portugal's horizon

Fast-food giant McDonalds has a new Portuguese general director who has guaranteed that the chain is committed to opening four to five new restaurants across Portugal every year.
It’s all part of the country’s ‘McSpansion’ plan, Jorge Ferraz told Diário Económico, stressing that even when Portugal hit financial rock bottom at the peak of the economic crisis, McDonalds continued to invest in the country.
In the last six years, the fast-food chain has invested €120 million in new restaurants and improvements, and now boasts 142 outlets up and down the country.
“We want to keep investing and growing in Portugal,” Ferraz added, highlighting the increasing number of Portuguese suppliers that work with McDonalds.
Ketchup is now provided by Italagro from the HIT group, which is the latest of McDonald’s 30 Portuguese suppliers.
Regarding McDonald’s performance over the last two years in Portugal, Ferraz said that although sales dropped in 2012, there was a 2.1% recovery last year and 2014 is expected to continue the upward trend.
