McCanns react to PJ statement

GERRY AND Kate McCann have used their revamped Find website to comment on statements by the head of the Polícia Judiciária, who earlier this week said investigators were “hasty” in naming the McCanns as arguidos.

Writing on the McCann’s behalf on the site about director Alípio Ribeiro’s comments on national radio station Rádio Renascença on Sunday, family spokesman Clarence Mitchell said: “If the Portuguese police, under Mr Ribeiro, now do the only proper thing by eliminating Kate and Gerry from their enquiry, they and our own investigators can work together rapidly and effectively to find Madeleine and to bring those responsible for her abduction to justice.”

The heat is on Alípio Ribeiro across Portugal at present, with representatives of judges, lawyers and police investigators criticising the PJ director for disrespecting the mandatory discretion required in an ongoing investigation.

Meanwhile, the lawyer of Robert Murat, the first person named as an arguido in the Madeleine case also reacted to the statements.

Francisco Pagarete told The Resident on Monday that he could not “see the purpose of this radio interview” and that he didn’t “know if he (Alípio Ribeiro) just forgot to mention Robert”. “The only thing I know is that the timing and the formula are all very strange, especially now when it seemed that the investigation was going to speed again,” he said.

The Justice Ministry and the Procuradoria Geral da República, which heads the criminal polices, had both still refused to comment on the matter by the time The Resident went to press. Cecília Pires
