McCanns could face Gonçalo Amaral in court

Kate and Gerry McCann are expected to return to Portugal to face former police detective Gonçalo Amaral in court next week at a libel hearing.

According to British newspapers, the McCanns, who filed a one million pound sterling libel suit against Amaral, are expected to attend the start of the trial, which will begin at the High Court in Lisbon on December 11.

Gonçalo Amaral was originally in charge of the Madeleine investigation but was later removed from the case.

He then wrote a book about the investigation, The Truth of the Lie (A Verdade da Mentira), which claimed three-year-old Madeleine McCann died in an accident at the family’s holiday apartment in Praia da Luz in 2007 and that the McCanns later disposed of her body.

The McCanns recently won a court battle to ban the book from further publication. The book has earned the retired police detective thousands of pounds sterling and he also made a TV documentary about the investigation.

This would be the second time Kate and Gerry McCann, both 41 from Rothley Leicestershire, would have returned to Portugal since Madeleine disappeared.
