Portimão Mayor Manuel da Luz has said that “everything will be done” to achieve the construction of an aerodrome in the council.
In a statement sent to the Algarve Resident, Portimão Câmara said: “Manuel da Luz guaranteed that everything will be done by 2013 to realise the project for the construction of the Barlavento Regional Aerodrome, which is included in the PROTAL regional development plan.”
This project has already met with some resistance from residents living in the Monte Canelas area, who are worried that their area may be chosen for the aerodrome.
The aerodrome project was raised during a meeting earlier this month between the mayor and around 30 local tourist development business people to discuss the current state of the industry and define strategies for the near future.
Topics such as measures to attract more tourists to Portimão this year and the preparation of measures for the 2011 to 2013 were discussed as well as security.
“A project for the creation of the Portimão Tourism Association was presented, with the aim of reinforcing the public/private partnership in this area to work with the regional tourism association, which was welcomed by many participants,” said Portimão Câmara.
