Mayor of Funchal, Madeira, calls for more police, or “bring in the military”

Mayor of Funchal, Madeira, Pedro Calado is not living up to his name (‘calado’ means silent in Portuguese). He is demanding that something be done, “and done now”, in his town to stop the rising ‘insecurity’ that has followed an increase in the consumption of synthetic drugs. He tells SIC if the PSP (town police) doesn’t have enough agents, then it is time to call in the GNR or even the Army. Violent incidents in Funchal have escalated in recent months, to the point that there have even been ‘shootings’ – something completely out of keeping with a tourist destination.
