Following the nationwide petition to lift the pandemic-led ban on recreational fishing, the mayor of rural Aljezur, on the west coast of the Algarve, has appealed directly to the government. José Gonçalves says the sport could be reopened gradually, starting with allowing the residents in each parish to fish or gather shellfish within the parish confines. This way, the families whose lives most depend on fishing as a way of life and subsistence will be compensated quickest.
