LISBON CÂMARA President, Carmona Rodrigues, has given the green light for various projects to breath new life into the city’s former theatre land, Parque Mayer.
Starting this summer, the currently rundown and forgotten former vaudeville and revue site, off the smart Avenida da Liberdade, will be renovated to become a venue for concerts, festivals and shows. There are also plans to transform former theatres, ABC and Revista, and nightclub B.Leza into an arts academy or theatre school, thus maintaining the acting tradition of the area.
A further project will be the launch of a graffiti competition to decorate a wall of the Botanical Garden that backs onto Parque Mayer, following a request from producers of the popular youth TV series, Morangos com Açúcar, in which the street art is highlighted.
These initiatives form part of a larger project by famous international architect Frank Gehry, which could eventually include cinemas, shops, cafés, restaurants and bars.
