Mayor and gypsy community help to clean up Faro council

Around 250 tonnes of rubbish was collected around Faro council as part of a cleanup operation promoted by the Câmara on December 12.

Faro Mayor Macário Correia donned a pair of blue overalls for the occasion and helped to collect part of the rubbish which included around 200 tonnes of rubble, 33 tonnes of solid urban waste, two tonnes of recyclable material and more than two tonnes of organic waste.

A total of 250 volunteers took part in the morning cleanup from 9am until 1pm with the help of 25 vehicles that were used to remove the rubbish collected.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

In a statement sent to the Algarve Resident, Faro Câmara said that it hoped to make Faro council a cleaner and better place to live.

“We would like to express our particular satisfaction with

the involvement of the local gypsy community in Cerro do Bruxo, who got to work and collected 20 tonnes of solid urban waste,” added the statement.

Macário Correia has announced that another rubbish collection day will be organised in the New Year, which he hopes will include the involvement of more volunteers and equipment so that other areas of the council can benefit from a cleanup.
