At the same time, cargo containers at Lisbon’s port bound for the United States are subject to tough new inspections with the latest x-ray equipment to stop terrorists. Lisbon is the first port in the country to use the new equipment, which was developed in the EU following the September 11 attacks.
The customs operation is carried out with the help of four full-time US agents based in Lisbon and working alongside the Portuguese port authorities.
