THE ANNUAL May Day union protest march through Lisbon passed off peacefully on Thursday.
This year’s protest, organised by the country’s largest umbrella union, the CGTP, was aimed principally at the government’s revised labour law, which union leaders claim does nothing to improve the situation of hundreds of thousands of freelance workers.
Around 30,000 supporters, mostly public sector and part time employees, gathered at the Marquês de Pombal rotunda for the march down Avenida da Liberdade to Rossio, sporting placards and waving banners accusing the Portuguese Prime Minister José Socrates of being a “liar” and chanting “injustice”.
