Portugal’s main workers’ unions, CGTP and UGT, held separate demonstrations in Lisbon on May 1 to protest against the government’s austerity measures and precarious working conditions. Thousands of protestors gathered at the Alameda Afonso Henriques and at Avenida da Liberdade to support the demonstrations organised by the CGTP and UGT unions, respectively, which accuse the government of “strangling the population with its austerity programme and of creating no conditions for economic growth and employment”.
