Maximum fire warning in 50 municipalities

Fire risks greatest in north, centre interior and Algarve

More than 50 municipalities in the North and Centre interior of Portugal and in the Algarve region are in maximum danger of wildfire today, warns Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere IPMA)

Fifty-one municipalities in the districts of Bragança, Viseu, Guarda, Castelo Branco, Portalegre and Santarém are at maximum danger levels.

Registering very high fire danger are 50 further municipalities in the municipalities of Vila Real, Bragança, Viseu, Guarda, Castelo Branco, Portalegre, Coimbra, Santarém, Beja and Faro.

High danger fire warnings cover all Algarve municipalities, the entire Alentejo region and another 30 municipalities in the districts of Santarém, Lisbon, Leiria, Aveiro, Coimbra, Viseu and Vila Real.

The fire risk determined by IPMA has five levels, ranging from low to maximum. Calculations are obtained from air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and amount of precipitation in the last 24 hours.

Since the beginning of the year, more than 5,181 fires have affected 10,565 hectares of rural land.

IPMA forecasts a slight drop in maximum temperatures and sometimes strong wind on the south coast and highlands today. Periods of rain, generally weak, are also expected in the North and Centre regions, especially on the coast.

As for temperatures, minimums will vary between 13º Celsius (Guarda and Viseu) and 20ºC (Lisbon and Santarém) and maximums between 22ºC (Porto) and 36ºC (Faro).
