Masters of the greens

Sunday afternoon saw the Estela and Iberico Golf Club teams emerge as the winners and runners-up respectively of the Algarve Masters final on Carvoeiro’s Pestana Pinta Course.

The two threesomes thus beat over 3,500 amateur players nationwide for the right to participate in the prestigious Pro-Am event which opens the PGA European Tour 3rd edition of the Portugal Masters at the Oceânico Victoria Golf Club on Wednesday.

The 2009 Vilamoura field is promising to be the strongest in the tournament’s history with Rory McIlroy, Lee Westwood, Ross Fisher, Graeme McDowell and Paul Lawrie becoming the latest European stars to confirm their places alongside the likes of two-time US Open winner Retief Goosen, Ben Curtis, Padraig Harrington and defending champion Álvaro Quirós.

Back on the local amateur scene, the Hotel Quinta do Lago in Almancil will be organising its 14th golf tournament from October 31 to November 7 under the direction of their pro Steve Walker.

The popular event, which will be played out on the Pinheiros Altos, Vale de Lobo Ocean, Oceânico Old, Quinta do Lago Sul and new Laranjal courses, offers competitors a special seven-day package deal at the luxury resort priced at 1,755 euros per person.

Entries for the competition can be made under [email protected] or by ringing 289 350 350.
