A massive explosion, heard over “tens of kilometers” from where it took place in Ponte de Lima yesterday, signalled the death of “experienced fireworks factory employee” Luís Amado, 49. No-one appears to understand exactly what led to the explosion. Other workers were in the Pirotecnia Minhota factory at the time, but escaped unharmed. Witness reports describe buildings shaking from the blast over 10kms away. Pirotecnia Minhota was in the news earlier this week as the company is on trial for the alleged illegal trafficking of fireworks to Madeira.
