Martinhal holds first-ever Olympic triathlon

Martinhal Beach Resort & Hotel in Sagres will be hosting its first-ever ‘Martinhal Triathlon’ on October 26.
The award-winning resort – which in 2013 won a World Travel Award for ‘Europe’s Leading Villa Resort’ – says the aim of the event is to provide “an amazing ride through Sagres and to take participants to Finisterra – the end of the world as Europeans thought until the 1400’s”.
And besides “supporting local tourism and great sporting and personal feats”, the competition will also have a charitable side, as all proceeds will go to NECI – a local charity based in the Western Algarve for mentally and physically handicapped children and adults.
According to the organisers, there will be two separate events – a Sprint Triathlon (750m swim in the sea, 40km bike ride and 10km run) and an Olympic Triathlon (1.5km swim, 40km bike ride and 10km run).
The race is expected to become a firm fixture on the Portuguese Triathlon Federation’s calendar.
To bring the competition to life, Martinhal teamed up with the Algarve Triathlons group, started recently by local businessmen John Hill and Tom Longhurst.
The duo successfully organised their first event in Praia da Luz in April, which attracted 130 teams and individuals from here and abroad.
For the Martinhal event, people can sign up either individually or as a team.
Prices range from between €30 for individuals and €65 for teams in the sprint fixture, and between €40 and €90 for the Olympic race.
Other deals including accommodation, etc., are also available.
