Just as nationally bird protection society SPEA has called for urgent new legislation to limit hunting, Alcoutim council is hosting the 8th Feira da Perdiz (Partridge Festival) – a celebration of country sports and life, in which hunting plays a prominent part. The event will play out at the Pavilhão Desportivo in Martim Longo, officially opening its doors on Saturday morning at 10am. Entrance is free, and activities continue into Sunday.
Before doors open, however, there will be a rabbit shoot, scheduled for 8am, and a BTT bike race (9am). Over 50 local firms and businesses are due to take part, with demonstrations by hunting dogs, displays of falconry, greyhound racing and even an equestrian “spectacle”.
For visitors, there will be several stalls offering typical gastronomic dishes – particularly those centring on game – musical entertainment and other attractions, including cookery demonstrations.
