Marquês tunnel–final section of António de Aguiar road opens

LISBON CÂMARA President, Pedro Santana Lopes, was on hand recently to open another section of road, formerly closed off by the extensive Marquês de Pombal tunnel works.

A trunk of road in Avenida Joaquim António de Aguiar was opened to traffic, signaling the end of surface works linked to the construction of the tunnel, which aims to relieve traffic in and out of the city centre. With the conclusion of the roadway going down towards the Rotunda, traffic can now freely circulate in both directions of the respective lanes.

“Step by step, we are returning to normal,” said Santana Lopes, who also praised the construction and engineering teams working on site. “This section of work has been carried out without incidents and within the scheduled time limit. Soon all the work will be finished.”

The President went on to say that these demanding works were now entering their final phase, which would begin on the length of the tunnel, under Avenida Fontes Pereira de Melo as from next week. He said that the cross-linking of the tunnel with the metro line would begin when all of the technical details had been weighed up.
