Marina art raises funds for charity

An exhibition of paintings by Portuguese artist José Fortunato in the Lagos Marina Art Gallery has already raised €3,000 for a local children’s home.

Within only a few days of the exhibition opening to the public, 12 paintings were sold with the entire proceeds being donated to the Centro de Assistência Social Lucinda Anino dos Santos (CASLA) children’s home in the centre of Lagos.

The theme of the exhibition, entitled O Mar Salgado (Salty Sea), is the ocean and is based on a poem by the famous Portuguese poet Fernado Pessoa. The exhibition is part of an ongoing programme supported by Lagos Marina for CASLA.

José Fortunato, aged 65, is showing 20 oil paintings of seascapes inspired by the coastline of the Lagos area where he spent holidays during his youth as well as the Cascais region.  A retired mechanical engineer, he lives in Lisbon and took up painting as a hobby 15 years ago.

Ingrid Fortunato, the marina director, said: “We are delighted with the wonderful support we have so far received for such a worthy local cause and we hope that the final donation to CASLA will be even higher.”

She added: “We have an association of marina clients who every year organise an event and collect money for

the children.”

The gallery is located in the Núcleo Gil Eanes square within the marina, a short distance from the Marina Suite Hotel, and is open from 5pm until 9pm from Wednesday until Sunday until August 14.
