March 2016 has been named “the coldest month since 1984” and the “sixth coldest since 1931” in Portugal.
According to the national Met Office (IPMA), the average minimum temperature in mainland Portugal last month was 5.2ºC – while the number of days with temperatures equal to or below 0ºC was “higher than normal”.
In fact, temperatures were “almost always lower” than habitual March averages.
The chilliest temperature (-3.2ºC) was registered in Miranda do Douro (Bragança) on March 1, while the highest (23.4ºC) came in Castro Verde (Beja) and Alcoutim (Algarve) on March 30.
