President Marcelo is to address the nation at 8pm this evening following what has been widely interpreted as the ‘snub’ delivered by prime minister António Costa on Tuesday, when he ‘refused’ to sack his minister of infrastructures – despite ubiquitous calls for this being ‘the only option’. Portugal’s head of State has a packed agenda in the coming days: Friday seeing him leave for the coronation of King Charles III in London, thus this evening is the last moment available for Marcelo to elaborate on the message posted on his official site last Tuesday, in which it is clear he does not agree with the prime minister’s actions, and believes they prejudice the public’s perception of the correct working of the country’s institutions.
