President Marcelo will be addressing the nation this evening at 8pm, following the vote to declare a new State of Emergency in parliament this afternoon.
As he has explained, his decree (click here) is “now in the hands of parliament” and he will “wait to see what happens”.
It is almost certain that the house will vote in favour of the decree, which was requested by the government itself and is understood to have the backing of both PS Socialists and PSD centre-right.
Despite the fact that there are a number of other parties represented in parliament, PS and PSD votes alone will win the vote.
The terms of the State of Emergency will be discussed throughout the course of the day, with the vote due at 4pm.
