President Marcelo has rubber-stamped a new law giving parents 20-days leave from work in the case of the death of a child. As inhumane as it may seem up until now parents were only allowed five days off work if they lost a child. This was challenged last year by Acreditar – the association of parents and friends of children with cancer – which defended five days was “manifestly insufficient” for parents facing pain and a sense of loss that would last a lifetime. The new law does not change the 5-day leave of absence ruling in the case of the death of a spouse.
