Marcelo honours pledge to ‘talk about human rights’ in Qatar

No matter the underlying political repercussions, Portugal’s head of state Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has today made good on his pledge to “talk about human rights in Qatar”. His words were directed to his Ghanian counterpart, President Nana Akufo-Addo in an initiative organised by the Education For All foundation in conjunction with the United Nations. Marcelo defended “the importance of human rights, not only political and economic but individual freedom and inclusion of all, including migrants, regardless of sexual orientation or gender”, said Lusa this afternoon. Whether or not this latest ‘declaration’ will be considered hostile to the Qatari regime is what we will wait to discover. Marcelo meantime will be on his way home once the Portugal-Ghana game has concluded.
