President Marcelo has today congratulated his Finnish counterpart, Sauli Niinistö, on the accession of Finland to NATO, stating the “unreserved” support of Portugal to this “historic enlargement”. In a note on his official website, Marcelo says the move constitutes an important reinforcement of the Atlantic Alliance and a solid strengthening of a structure that has been essential in matters of collective security and defence. The Atlantic Alliance will now have 31 member countries. Russian sources have been quoted as saying they will take “countermeasures”. The country sees Finland’s accession as an “assault” on Russian security.
