On his way, President Marcelo's invitation from Irish president Michael Higgins is a long-standing one - and coincides with the 80th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations between Portugal and Ireland.

Marcelo arrives in Ireland, for first official visit in 23 years

President Marcelo has arrived in Ireland today for the first official visit by a Portuguese president in 23 years. It’s a visit that was originally scheduled for 2020, but delayed due to the pandemic. Now, the plan is to “strengthen relationships with Irish authorities, in a European context, bearing in mind the post-Brexit situation and the relationship with the United Kingdom, as well as making contact with the Portuguese community” in Ireland. Portugal’s head of State is being accompanied for this two-day visit by foreign affairs minister João Gomes Cravinho, and five parliamentary MPs: Rosário Gambôa (PS), Germana Rocha ) PSD), Rui Paulo Sousa (CHEGA), Patrícia Gilvaz (Iniciativa Liberal), and Alma Rivera (PCP).
