A fundraising marathon is taking place tomorrow (Saturday) in aid of an Algarve theatre company.
Almancil International Rotary Club (AIRC) is supporting the Caminhar Algarve 2012 marathon, which is organised by the Associação Caminhadas em Portugal.
Covering some 45kms, the run will take place in the parishes of Alte, Messines and Silves, complemented by two shorter routes, the half-marathon covering 25kms and the mini-marathon covering 15kms, enabling runners of all levels to participate.
For the first time, the marathon will be run along the old Caminho de São Vicente, better known as the Via Algarviana.
Online registration is open until 6pm today (March 30) and will cost €25, including energy drinks, insurance, buffet dinner at the end of the run at the Café Inglês in Silves, transport to the start of the run and a trophy which will be presented to the person who correctly answers all questions about the Barrocal environment.
All proceeds raised at the event will be donated to the Education Service of the Algarve Theatre Company, which operates in a bus equipped with a stage, sitting area, technical box, wings, dressing rooms and 31 seats for schoolchildren.
The 45 kilometre marathon will begin at the Alte Hotel at 8am, followed by a second checkpoint at the Messines, Furradora level crossing at 11am. The last checkpoint and the start of the mini-marathon will be at the picnic area of Barragem do Funcho, Vale Fuzeiros, at 2pm.
