Mar Shopping Algarve leads Ria Formosa clean-up this weekend

A clean-up initiative is due to take place in several parts of the Algarve’s Ria Formosa this Saturday and Sunday (March 29-30).

Organised by Loulé’s Mar Shopping Algarve shopping centre, it will involve around 150 volunteers and aim to rid the beloved estuary of rubbish.

Among the volunteers will be members of the many partnering entities, such as the Portuguese Environmental Agency (APA), Animal Rescue Algarve (ARA), Faro Council, CCMAR, Nautical Centre of Praia de Faro, Designer Outlet Algarve, National Institute of Nature and Forest Conservation (ICNF), IKEA, Montenegro Parish Council, Algarve Tourism Board (RTA), the Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds (SPEA) and Zoomarine.

Participants will be divided into groups of 10 to 15 people and will focus their efforts on areas that have been “previously identified by ICNF” in order to avoid “interfering with protected or nesting areas.”

A similar clean-up is planned to take place again in October.
