The inaugural Oceânico Bowls Masters Portugal at the Amendoeira Golf Resort saw Gary Ellis from Whitefield, Manchester, crowned champion and take home the Oceânico Bowls Masters Portugal Trophy and prize money of 3,000 pounds sterling.
The Masters title was decided on October 16, with Gary Ellis beating Graeme Wilson in a nail-biting match which finished 21-20.
The competition featured 64 players, including 16 from UK qualifying games, and the Oceânico Algarve Crown Green Open, with top bowlers Glynn Cookson, Ant Bracken, Ant Aldridge and Andy Cairns also taking part.
Gary Ellis said: “The green is really top class. I will definitely be back for other competitions, not only to defend my title at next October’s Oceânico Bowls Masters Portugal, but also at the Oceânico Iberian Crown Green Cup in March 2010.”
The Taylor Bowls Trophy was also decided during the week’s play, with Dave Jackson taking the title, beating Martin Gilpin from Kendal in the final on Wednesday, October 14 with a score of 21-19 to claim the 400 pound sterling prize.
Highlights of the event, sponsored by the Algarve Resident, ATA, Central das Cervejas, Taylor Bowls Ltd, Tonic Underwriting, Trofi Verde, Premier FX and Southwest Charters, will be shown on SKY Sports 3 on November 3 at 7pm and November 4 at 2am, 7am, and 3pm.
