Man tries to rape woman near Carvoeiro beach

A 29-year-old Portuguese man was arrested by PJ police shortly after trying to rape a 25-year-old Lithuanian woman as she was leaving Carvoeiro beach with a child on Sunday afternoon (June 7).

The attack happened on a staircase leading to the beach.

Before attacking the woman, the man asked her for money.

When she refused, he “threw her on the floor” and began “ripping her clothes and groping her”, Correio da Manhã reports.

The child, believed to be related to the woman, tried to tackle the man off before running for help.

By the time help arrived, the young woman had broken free and the man had fled.

GNR police easily traced him, thanks to the victim’s description and “visible injuries” sustained during the attack.

The man is now facing charges for attempted rape.
