A 24-year-old man has been put in a medically induced coma after being violently stabbed in Albufeira in the early hours of New Year’s Day morning.
GNR police have already arrested four people, aged 17 to 19, although there are suspicions that more people may have been involved in the attack.
Authorities were alerted to the stabbing at 7.59am. By the time GNR police arrived at the scene, described by national tabloid Correio da Manhã as “nightlife spot”, the suspected attackers had already fled.
However, police were able to track down at least four of them based on reports from eyewitnesses.
Agents also seized two switchblades, one of which is believed to be the crime weapon.
The victim, who was stabbed several times in the upper body area, was assisted by local firefighters and INEM emergency services before being taken to Faro Hospital with serious injuries.
Due to the severity of his injuries, he was put in an induced coma.
PJ criminal police were informed of the case although the investigation will remain in the hands of GNR’s criminal investigation unit.
CM adds that the four suspects were due to be heard in court today (Thursday).
