Maritime police agents entered the water to rescue the man, who was stuck in a muddy area
A 37-year-old man who accidentally fell into the Arade River in Portimão and was “at risk of drowning” was rescued by maritime police in the early hours of Friday morning (February 17).
Authorities were alerted at 1am that someone had fallen into the river and was in need of assistance.
Two agents from the local maritime police force were dispatched, having been able to locate the victim despite the “low visibility.”
According to the National Maritime Authority (AMN), the man was stuck in a muddy area, unable to move and almost submerged, which prompted the agents to enter the water to rescue him.
The man showed signs of hypothermia and was given a thermal blanket until firefighters and INEM emergency services arrived to provide first-aid. He was then taken to hospital.
