Fisherman was swept off cliff by wave in Aljezur
A 53-year-old man has been rescued and taken to hospital with serious injuries after falling from a cliff while recreationally fishing north of Arrifana beach in Aljezur.
According to a National Maritime Authority (AMN) statement, the man is believed to have been swept off the cliff by a wave and fallen into the sea, having been able to swim over to a rocky area near the cliff.
Authorities were alerted at around 9.30am. Members of Lagos Maritime Police and Sagres’ Lifeboat Station were dispatched to the scene, as well as Aljezur Volunteer Firefighters, INEM emergency services and a Portuguese Air Force aircraft, which retrieved the victim from the rocky area.
“The fisherman had suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital by firefighters,” the AMN statement adds.
