Man faces jail for robbing Quarteira bank while on probation

PJ police have arrested a 37-year-old man who was on probation but allegedly returned to the world of crime by robbing a Montepio bank in Quarteira on Wednesday, September 7.

Armed with a knife, the man is said to have entered the bank with his face “partially covered” and threatened a female bank worker into handing him €700 in cash by grabbing her by the hair, says national tabloid Correio da Manhã.

PJ police tracked the man down in Beja, where he lives, with the help of the local PSP police.

He has already been heard by Faro’s DIAP (department of penal investigation) and will await trial in preventive custody.

According to CM, the man was handed a 17-year jail sentence in 2004 for “crimes of theft and document forgery”, as well as driving without a licence. He spent 10 years in prison before being released on probation.
