Man drowns at Óbidos beach without lifeguards

A 41-year-old swimmer died at Bom Sucesso beach in Óbidos last week – a beach that is not watched over by lifeguards.

Emergency services were called to the scene at around 11.40am when beachgoers noticed the man floating near the shore, Peniche port captain Pedro Silva told Lusa news agency.

They tried to help firefighters resuscitate the man before he was taken to Caldas da Rainha’s casualty department, where he was pronounced dead.

How the man ended up drowning is unknown, though the area where he was swimming is notorious for being dangerous and is not supervised by any lifeguards.
