A 59-year-old man died on Wednesday afternoon after going into cardiac arrest while kitesurfing in the Ria de Alvor (Portimão).
“Friends who were with the victim realised what had happened and immediately called 112 (national emergency hotline), having transported the victim by boat to the fishing boat area of Alvor,” the national maritime authority (AMN) said in a statement.
Maritime police were the first on the scene and attempted to revive the man, whose nationality has not been revealed, using an automated external defibrillator. Members of the ‘SeaWatch’ project and INEM emergency services also tried reviving the man, but to no avail.
The man’s death was pronounced at the scene at 7.15pm.
Maritime police’s psychology office is said to be offering support to the family of the victim.
