Asian hornet nest forces partial closure of Sintra Palace grounds

Man dies in Tondela after allegedly being stung by Asian hornet

A 38-year-old man has died on Thursday, September 26 in Serra do Caramulo, in the northern borough of Tondela, after allegedly being stung by an Asian hornet, a GNR police source has told Lusa news agency.

The man was apparently stung after a nest fell from one of the pine trees that were being cut down in the area.

However, “only the autopsy will confirm this”, GNR’s Viseu spokesperson António Dias told Lusa.

It was just last week that the national association of municipal vets warned that Portugal is losing the battle against ‘killer’ Asian hornets, which before this latest suspected death had already been linked to at least another two deaths on national soil as well as the decimation of honeybee populations (click here).
