Man arrested for knife attack at Forum Algarve

Police have arrested a 48-year-old man for attempted murder after stabbing his landlord at the Forum Algarve shopping centre in Faro. During the arrest, authorities also confiscated over 17 doses of cocaine, three tactical knives, a hammer, a machete, a cleaver, a sickle, two vehicles and around €1,000 in cash.

The attack dates back to November 21 and was filmed by a witness, who posted the footage on social media. The video shows the attacker, wearing a football jersey, trying to stab another man who tries to dodge and ends up falling into the centre’s Christmas village.

While the man is on the ground, the attacker approaches him and appears to stab him. He finally walks away before the video ends.

The man was quickly identified as António Damião, a former nightclub security guard who served an eight-year, eight-month jail sentence for his alleged involvement in a drug trafficking scheme dating back to 2008.

According to Correio da Manhã tabloid, the attack came after his landlord cut off Damião’s water due to late rent payments.

Jornal de Notícias reports that the victim had already complained to police that Damião had threatened him and his family.

The paper also added that PSP police have also received other complaints about the man and are making a case to keep the man in custody until he faces trial.
