A 28-year-old man has been arrested after nearly running over a police officer in Lagos.
The man, who lives in Lisbon, is suspected of travelling to the Algarve frequently to traffic cocaine and heroin. Says PSP police, he would hide most of the drugs in vacant plots of land outside of Lagos.
Police closed in on him at a local car park on Friday (February 1), but the man tried to escape, forcing a police officer to jump out of the way of the oncoming car. Officers were able to stop the vehicle by shooting at its tyres.
The operation led to the confiscation of 2,437 doses of heroine, two scales, €3,855 in cash, a vehicle and many other drug paraphernalia. The man has been remanded in custody after appearing before a judge on Saturday.
Two other people were also arrested due to suspicions of drug trafficking on Friday by PSP police in Vila Real de Santo António. Officers were tipped off about “suspicious movements” at a rundown house in the municipality which was later confirmed to be used for “drug trafficking”.
The suspects were caught while leaving the house and will await trial in freedom under the “Termo de Identidade e Residência” regime, in which suspects have to be available whenever notified by the authorities.
