Mamamaratona success

MORE THAN 2,000 runners and walkers participated in the eighth annual Mamamaratona mini marathon on Sunday. More than 28,000 euros was raised on the day with the final amount expected to be much higher when the sponsorship money is collected, said the organisers.

Fears of bad weather eased as the few clouds in the sky in the morning cleared and the warm ups began.

Clowns, jugglers and stilt walkers entertained the crowds as they patiently waited to begin the race that started promptly at 10am.

Algarve running groups the Almancil Hash House Harriers and Sue’s Road Runners were some of the participants in the race that started at the Portimão exhibition site and continued along the riverside before turning back at the Portimão marina.

Those in the race could choose a five kilometre route or a longer 8.5 kilometre circuit that passed the boats from the Portimão Global Ocean race as they were preparing to leave on their trip around the world (see page 15).

Although there were many serious runners taking part in the Mamamaratona, there were also numerous children, many senior citizens from across the Algarve and even a couple of dogs!

Mamamaratona 8 was not a competitive race, however, the first participant to finish the run was Carlos Simões of the Caboverdeana Association with Ricardo Paixão coming second and João Ribeiro coming third.
