Making history come alive

It’s full steam ahead for Churchill – The Musical as a stage director has been appointed and dates scheduled for the world premiere of the show at the Lagoa auditorium in October.

British residents Trevor Holman and Derek Ash, who researched and wrote the show together, are hoping their new musical about Sir Winston Churchill will become an international hit and are calling for members of the local community who are passionate about theatre and history to audition for roles (see the Algarve Resident edition, September 4, 2009).

“There will be a cast of 20 professional actors coming from London to perform in the musical. However, we also want to invite local amateur actors, singers and dancers to audition for roles as well as backstage crew,” said Trevor Holman.

Renowned British stage director Ray Jeffery has signed up to direct the weeklong opening run of Churchill – The Musical and will be holding the open auditions, by appointment, in March.

Ray’s career in the theatre encompasses more than four decades during which time he has directed, choreographed or acted in over 1,000 musicals and 200 plays.

During that time, Ray directed world premieres of renowned shows such as Fiddler on the Roof, La Cage Aux Folles, Billy and Les Miserables.

Auditions for Churchill – The Musical will be held at the Hotel Garbe in Armação de Pêra on March 11 from 3pm until 9pm and on March 12 and 13 from midday until 9pm.

“We are keen to hear from anyone who thinks they’ve got what it takes to bring this story alive,” said Trevor Holman. “We are also keen to hear from people who would like to sell advertising for the programme of the show, which we hope will become a collector’s item.”

Rehearsals for the show are scheduled to start from September 21 with the full technical and dress rehearsal on October 1, the day before the opening night and world premiere of the musical on October 2 at the Lagoa auditorium.

“This will be a major production. We are hoping that it will be the biggest thing happening in the Algarve this year,” said Derek Ash.
