Following the huge success of the last three years, during which the Mamamaratona team has raised funds to buy a mobile mammography unit, the charity is now embarking on a new and even bigger venture, to raise money for a nuclear medicine unit here in the Algarve.
Residents in the Algarve will be able to visit the unit for cancer diagnosis and treatment, rather than having to travel to Lisbon and it will be located next to the radiotherapy unit in Faro, providing a much needed diagnosis and treatment centre all on one site.
A large sum is needed and the charity is counting on all residents of the Algarve to get involved. To this end, there will be the fourth run against cancer through the historic city of Silves on October 3, with many professional athletes from the Portuguese Athletics Association and celebrities taking part and providing entertainment throughout the day. It will be a fun day for the whole family where children can accompany parents on a five or eight kilometre walk, or simply enjoy the day as a leisurely spectator. There will be live music, refreshments, homemade cakes and many stalls. Businesses can sponsor activities such as T-shirts for the runners, sell their products on a stall and even enter a team of employees into the race.
Anyone who cannot attend on the day can send a donation, large or small, beforehand, knowing every euro is for a good cause. The organisational committee are a team of dedicated volunteers who give up a lot of personal time behind the scenes to make the event a success. You can contact any of the following to discuss how you can get involved or to find out more about the charity. All contributions can be directly deposited into the account at Montepio Geral, Rua do Alportel in Faro – NIB 003600329910033224959. A receipt will be sent.
