Major drug bust in Portimão and Silves sees 10 people arrested

Ten people were arrested and another five were named official suspects (‘arguidos’) in a major drug bust operation in Portimão and Silves this week. Police authorities searched 20 houses and 13 vehicles.

Speaking to Lusa news agency, Commissioner Fábio Coelho from the Criminal Investigation Squad of Portimão’s PSP police said 340 doses of drugs, several weapons and six cars were also seized.

The detainees are aged between 20 and 38 while a further five were named ‘arguidos’ on suspicion of being involved in “drug trafficking”, the source added.

Most of the searches were carried out in Portimão with the assistance of the GNR police.

“Several types of drugs were confiscated, including 240 grams of marijuana, two cannabis plants, 50 doses of ecstasy, 20 doses of cocaine and 20 doses of hashish,” the commissioner said.

Also seized were three 12mm shotguns, a 6.35mm pistol, two fake firearms and an expandable baton, as well as pyrotechnic equipment, and drug trafficking paraphernalia.

Said the PSP, the operation followed an investigation that had gone on for around two years and which focused on the “direct sale of drugs to consumers”.

Some of the people arrested were due to appear in court this week, the commissioner added.
