Maelys disappearance: man arrested

Breaking news this morning is that a 34-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of being involved in the disappearance of nine-year-old Maelys de Araújo in France last weekend.

The child of a Portuguese father and French mother however is still missing.

The man has been described as having been found in the vicinity of the wedding reception from which Maelys vanished in the early hours of Sunday morning, though he was not one of the 200 guests.

Portuguese media is picking up on this story while further details have been released in the French press of a “suspicious van” and the fact that the man arrested has been found to have inconsistencies in statements given to police.

A French website has reported that the van was spotted by a jogger on Monday afternoon – well over 24-hours after Maelys went missing (click here).

Inside the van was a girl “aged about 8 to 11”.

According to the jogger, the child told him everything was fine, and that she was waiting for her uncle who was “looking for things in the woods”.

The jogger apparently returned to the place where the vehicle had been a short time later, and it had gone, said linternaute.com.
